Lighthouse at SildegapetThe Skongenes fyr lighthouse has been flashing since 1870 on a peninsula of the island Vågsøy in the Sildegapet bay as an important navigational marker in front of the storm-battered Stadland peninsula. The former keeper buildings, arranged around a courtyard, can be booked as overnight accommodation through the hiking association DNT.

Brandsøy – Brandsøyåsen – An island experience with breathtaking views of the fjord and archipelago

The small island of Brandsøy is home not only to Florø, Norway’s westernmost town, but also to fantastic nature trails above the town with stunning viewpoints. From these panoramic viewpoints, you can fully admire the fairy-tale-like fjord and archipelago landscape of the fjords branching out and converging below. The ascent along the easy paved path through the natural forest is straightforward, and the loop trail on the beautiful path offers a fascinating nature experience with breathtaking panoramic views. > From Parking Lot 01at the bus stop—which features a hiking information board—the paved access road, closed to public traffic, leads to the transmission tower on Brandsøy. It passes several signposts marking hiking trails, but we’ll ignore those for now since we’re staying on the paved path all the way to the summit. Through the beautiful, near-wild mixed forest—passing under power lines a few times—the trail climbs at a gentle incline. At a hairpin turn, we reach the first and smaller of the transmission towers (just before which there’s a right turn for the return route later), to which we’ll make a detour later on. Continuing along the paved path, past a cabin and over a wooden footbridge, we head toward our destination: Viewpoint 02at Brandsøyåsen. Beautifully landscaped and equipped with a wooden deck, picnic tables, benches, and a shelter, as well as information boards and a viewing telescope, it invites you to take a leisurely break. Here you can enjoy a first-class view of the western part of the island and the vast fjord landscape to the north. Head back across the wooden boardwalk and continue along the same path to the small transmission tower ( 03). Here, it’s worth taking a detour up the path on the left to experience the beautiful view of the island and fjord landscape from a different perspective. Back on the paved path, head briefly downhill and, immediately after the hairpin turn, take the trail down to the left at the first fork. It leads through an idyllic deciduous forest, soon passing an enchanting 04small lake, and continues clockwise toward the east over the ridge to what is arguably the most beautiful spot on the hike. From here, we can fully savor the brilliant 05view of the northeastern fjord landscape. The enchanting backdrop—with the lovely island peaks surrounded by numerous fjords and the gentle mountain ridges in the background—exudes a special charm. The descent along the trail—which is quite steep in places and rocky in sections—winds through a beautiful coniferous forest and reaches the paved ascent trail at the valley floor. Following this trail to the left, we return to the starting point at the 01parking lot by the bus stop.
