On Europe's highest sea cliffThe Hornelen on the island of Bremangerlandet is the highest sea cliff in Europe. The legendary sandstone colossus rises almost vertically 860 m out of the Hornelsfjord. In Sogn og Fjordane, the Hornelen is the best-known witch rock. At midsummer and at Christmas, the witches gather on the summit to court the devil. According to the saga, King Olav Tryggvason climbed the wall around 995 and erected his coat of arms on the summit. When a shepherd tried to fetch the shield, he lost his footing on the wall and could neither advance nor retreat. Olav climbed up a second time, tucked the man under his arm, and brought him safely back. The "Olavsruta" tradition connects to this, a newly established via ferrata on the cliff wall.
