After the Ahr Valley in French, I was back today in the original Ahr Valley for hiking and chose a route that completely thrilled me.
As a template, I used the route from "Wander- und Kraxelspass" (many thanks!) and adapted it in length and course for myself.
The result is a 19km route with about 1000m elevation gain, which partly runs off the trails, leads over 3 ridges, is incredibly varied and repeatedly offers wide views into the valley.
Since you sometimes cannot directly follow very obvious tracks and have to find your way through bushes, a hiking app is essential for orientation.
The steep ascent at the beginning requires surefootedness, a head for heights, and good footwear. Those who feel safer can also use poles. Especially at this point, it goes STEEPLY uphill and cross-country. (A detour is possible)
Please behave especially on these passages, off the network of paths, as real hikers should. It’s not just about you and the adventure, but also respect for nature. Thank you!
You can follow my track for orientation; the data is accurate, but due to the current situation with weather, leaves, trees lying in the way... a correction might be necessary.
Generally, I do not recommend the route in wet conditions, rain, or winter!
Today I am really exhausted but also totally happy; it was simply a great adventure.
Camping Denntal is recommended as a campsite. From there you can start directly on the route.
Have fun

Challenging circular route with further highlights around the Ahr valley. Surefootedness, in parts also a head for heights, and very good fitness required! The route is more suitable for alpine experienced hikers!
Nestled between rolling hills and lush green forests, Kesseling offers a breathtaking backdrop for nature lovers. The charming half-timbered houses and narrow alleys lend the village a special charm. Here, both experienced hikers and families with children will find numerous opportunities to explore the surroundings on foot.
One of the most beautiful hiking tours leads along the Red Wine Trail. This trail stretches over 35 kilometres through the vineyards along the Ahr and offers spectacular views of the valley as well as picturesque winegrowing villages such as Altenahr or Mayschoß. The red wine hiking trail is especially recommended in autumn, when the leaves turn colourful and the vines bear their bulging grapes.
For families with children, on the other hand, the nature adventure trail "Waldkletterpark" is suitable. Here, little adventurers can playfully explore the forest and master exciting challenges. Whether rope bridges over streams or tree trunks to balance on - this trail promises fun for young and old.
Another highlight is the "Kesseling Waterfall". This impressive natural waterfall is hidden in a dense forest area. Surrounded by moss-covered rocks and lush vegetation, it offers a unique atmosphere for hikers. Especially in spring, when the snowmelt increases the flow of water, the Kesseling waterfall shows its most spectacular side.
The best seasons for hiking in Kesseling are spring and autumn. In spring, nature comes to life: The flowers bloom, the birds chirp and the lush green spreads everywhere. Autumn, on the other hand, transforms the landscape into a sea of colour as the leaves slowly change colour.
Whether along the red wine hiking trail, on the nature adventure trail or to the impressive Kesseling waterfall - hiking in Kesseling is an experience for all the senses. Immerse yourself in this picturesque region of Germany and let yourself be enchanted by its natural beauty!
