At 717 m, Svarttjernshøgda in Hadeland is the highest mountain in Nordmarka, the forested and lake-rich hilly region just outside Oslo. A rewarding short hike leads to the observation tower at the summit. ▶ The Tverrsjøstallen 01 ski lodge on Lake Tverrsjøen is a popular destination in both summer and winter, serving as the starting point for numerous ski, hiking, and biking trails. When the ski lodge serves coffee during snowy conditions, so many skiers flock there on sunny winter weekends that the narrow toll road through the Svenådalen valley is restricted to one-way traffic for hours at a time. From the lodge, the blue-marked hiking trail follows the toll road across the Svarttjernsbekken, the highest source stream of the Akerselva River, which flows into Oslo. A short while later, the blue trail marker leaves the toll road and follows a path through the forested mountainside, turning left at the first fork along the fall line: The root-strewn path climbs relatively steeply among pines, spruces, and deciduous trees; in the fall, nature sets a bountiful table with blueberries. Almost out of nowhere, the wooden observation tower on Svarttjernshøgda 02 appears among the treetops. It offers a 360-degree panorama from the Randsfjord in the northwest to the hills of the Oslomarka in the south. In the marshes directly north of Svarttjernshøgda, the highest headwaters of the Akerselva spring forth; the Puttmyrene are considered the primary source marshes: the streams that gather there flow eastward toward the small Ølja reservoir. The trail, signposted toward Ølja, winds through the forest between the highest of these bogs and follows one of the streams—which flows over boulder fields—steeply up the Oljeberga mountainside to the toll road in front of Lake Ølja 03, a popular spot for anglers, on whose shore there is a barbecue and rest area shaded by trees. The toll road leads gently downhill above the valley of the Oljebekken, which has its source in the lake, and when the forest road curves to the left, the forest trail branches off to the right a short distance later, leading back to the starting point at the Tverrsjøstallen 01 ski lodge.
