Sandgrava – Rånåsen – Hvalebykampen – Hadeland Panorama overlooking the Randsfjord

The forested ridge Hvalebykampen (771 m) offers panoramic views of the rolling hills and woodlands of Hadeland to the south of Lake Randsfjord, both through the trees and from open areas. Thanks to its relatively high starting point, the ridge is equally popular with both hikers and cross-country skiers. ▶ Hvalebykampen rises so steeply from the surrounding terrain that, over a distance of less than 3 km as the crow flies, it drops 570 meters in elevation to Lake Jarenvatnet near Jaren, the center of the municipality of Gran. Because of its steepness, some say it resembles a sphinx; the ridge itself is visible from all directions, and its striking silhouette is further accentuated by the television tower on the southern summit of Hvalebykampen. From the Sandgrava 01 parking lot at the end of the Risbakkvegen forest road, before the toll gate, the ridge trail—signposted “Rånåsen/Hvalebykampen” and marked in blue—leads upward along the forested ridge, with sweeping views opening up again and again. The trail winds its way up to the ridge and reaches its first viewpoint at the northern summit, Rånåsen 02; originally, this was the name given to the entire mountain range. To the northwest, another iconic peak of the Hadeland landscape comes into view—the Brandbukampen (522 m)—while to the northeast, the Lushaugen (812 m) rises on the border with Akershus County. From Rånåsen, the trail follows the ridge southward to the telecommunications tower on the scenic Hvalebykampen 03, the highest point of Rånåsen. After crossing a third hilltop, the blue-marked trail descends southward into a marshy hollow, where it meets Forest Road 04, which continues to the left toward the Hvalebysætra mountain pasture 05 at the eastern foot of Hvalebykampen; According to tradition, the surveyors staying at this mountain pasture while mapping Hadeland changed the name of the peak to “Hvalebykampen” as a token of gratitude. From the mountain pasture, the trail winds northward through the forest and eventually joins the toll road: it leads left back to the nearby starting point 01.
