When the vines turn golden yellow, orchard meadows and forests don their autumn colors, and the crisp air offers sweeping views across the Breisgau, Glottertal reveals one of its most charming sides. This wine-growing village lies on the western edge of the Black Forest, just a few kilometers from Freiburg, at the foot of the 1,243-meter-high Kandel. Thanks to its sun-drenched location, the valley enjoys a comparatively mild climate for viticulture, while the higher elevations are already distinctly characterized by the High Black Forest. There is a vertical difference of nearly 1,000 meters between the valley and the summit of the Kandel—and the landscape and hiking opportunities are correspondingly diverse.

Sun-drenched vineyards against an impressive Black Forest backdrop and sweeping views over the steep slopes down into the valley make this hike an experience. Some of the steepest and highest vineyards in Germany (up to 500 metres above sea level) are located in Glottertal. The vineyards of the Glottertal valley border directly on the mixed mountain forests of the Black Forest, making this beautiful hike correspondingly varied.

Fall Hikes in Glottertal

About 120 kilometers of marked hiking trails crisscross the Glottertal. The options range from leisurely walks along the valley floor to hikes through vineyards and side valleys, all the way up to a challenging climb up the Kandel. The trails through vineyards and deciduous forests are especially charming in the fall.

Between the Vineyards and the Black Forest

A lovely leisurely hike is the vineyard trail through Eichberg and Schlossberg. Stretching about 7.5 kilometers and covering an elevation gain of approximately 160 meters, it winds through the vineyards and the Eichberg Forest. Among the highlights is the “Roter Bur” vineyard, which offers a view of the Oberglotter Valley. On the Schlossberg as well, the trail winds through vineyards before descending to the castle courtyard.

Those who want a longer hike can choose the Grand Loop Hike around the Föhrental. The 15-kilometer tour takes about five hours and covers an elevation gain of about 650 meters. It explores one of the idyllic side valleys of the Glottertal.

Hikes on the Kandel

If you’re looking for a athletic challenge, take the summit hike from Glottertal to the Kandel. The 11-kilometer route climbs about 935 meters in elevation. The route leads from the vineyards through mountain forest, past Luser, Kranzkopf, and Gullerkopf to the Thomashütte, and on past the Gummenhütte to the summit of the Kandel. There, at 1,240 meters, the Kandel Pyramid awaits with sweeping panoramic views. You can take the bus back to Glottertal.

A less strenuous option is the circular hike around the Kandel summit. It starts at Kandelhöhe on the Kandelwiese and runs mostly at an elevation of about 1,100 meters. Narrow, sometimes rocky trails lead through mountain forests to the Großer Kandelfelsen and the Thomashütte, offering views over the Glottertal and the Breisgau. Passing by the Gummenhofhütte, which offers a place to stop for refreshments, the trail finally leads to the Kandel Pyramid.

In Search of Glottertäler's History

Two varied loop hikes demonstrate that hiking in the Glottertal can also be an encounter with the region’s history. The hike to the Hilzingermühle leads through the Oberglottertal, first along narrow trails beside the Glotter River and later along forest paths and sunny stretches. The destination is the Hilzingermühle, built in 1621, which is considered the oldest still-functioning mill in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district.

The Silbergrüble Trail points to an even older past: The ridge between Föhrental and Ohrensbach owes its name to silver ore mining, which was particularly active here in the 13th century. This shorter circular hike also offers beautiful views of the Glotter Valley and the Breisgau, as well as several “Glotter Valley nature loungers” along the way.

Overnight Stay and Refreshments in the Wine Region

Wine and cuisine go hand in hand in Glottertal. For centuries, grapes have been grown on the sun-drenched, sometimes extremely steep slopes. The weathered granite-gneiss soil shapes the character of the local wines, and as an award-winning “Weinsüden Wine Village,” Glottertal looks back on a long tradition of winemaking. Numerous inns, restaurants, cafés, and farm-style taverns offer the chance to sample regional cuisine and wines—a perfect way to round out a day of hiking.

For longer stays, guests can choose from traditional hotels as well as vacation apartments; some accommodations also offer wellness facilities. Overnight guests receive the KONUS guest card, which allows them to use public transportation in the Black Forest for free. This is particularly convenient for multi-day hikes and also makes it easier to take day trips to Freiburg and the surrounding Black Forest towns.
