Not just for statisticians: altitude record on Lake Como If you want to get really high on Lake Como, you can't miss the Legnone. It is the largest, highest mountain on the Lario, a real colossus with sweeping ridges, the north-western cornerstone of the Bergamo Alps. The view from the summit of Monte Legnone of the inner arc of the Alps, starting with the Monviso, 3841 m, over the Gran Paradiso, Valais and Bernese Alps, Adula, Bergell Alps, Bernina to Ortler and Adamello, is correspondingly magnificent. And thanks to the roads coming up from the Valle Varrone, the huge difference in altitude is reduced to a "manageable" 1300 meters, including the counter-climbs - just right for a beautiful day of hiking.

Since I had never managed to get to the Abbazia di Piona before, I started a small pilgrimage on August 11th... It began on Sentiero 8, via Montecchio Sud. The landscape was very beautiful and varied as I continued to the beach at Piona. Then followed a road section, best avoided in the blazing midday heat. Then I took Sentiero 7, which runs along the slope above the road and is apparently hardly used. From time to time, there were views of the bay and the peninsula. After crossing a road, I continued uphill to Olgiasca. Then came the real highlight of S7 (alto), the "crossing" of the peninsula. A wonderful path offering lots of variety and real enjoyment. The Abbazia di Piona was then an interesting, worthy conclusion to the hike.

Climb to the imposing Monte Legnone, the mighty pyramid that forms the corner between the basin of Lake Como and the Valtellina.
Over the centuries, the mountain has had several toponyms, starting with "Lineo", the oldest, from pre-Roman times. "Lin" meant "water" and the name was given in relation to the many accumulations of snow on its slopes that then flowed down to the valley with the arrival of the spring season, creating streams. It was later called "Tricuspide" by the Romans, because, arriving by boat from Mandello, it could give the impression of having three distinct peaks. In the Middle Ages, the name "Lineone" started to appear, recovering the root of the ancient denomination. From there comes Legnone as we call it today.
