Not just for statisticians: altitude record on Lake Como

If you want to get really high on Lake Como, you can't miss the Legnone. It is the largest, highest mountain on the Lario, a real colossus with sweeping ridges, the north-western cornerstone of the Bergamo Alps. The view from the summit of Monte Legnone of the inner arc of the Alps, starting with the Monviso, 3841 m, over the Gran Paradiso, Valais and Bernese Alps, Adula, Bergell Alps, Bernina to Ortler and Adamello, is correspondingly magnificent. And thanks to the roads coming up from the Valle Varrone, the huge difference in altitude is reduced to a "manageable" 1300 meters, including the counter-climbs - just right for a beautiful day of hiking.

The hike begins at the parking lot near the Rifugio Roccoli Lorla, 1463 m, on the long, wooded western ridge of the Legnone, initially only moderately ascending. The wide alpine path occasionally veers slightly to the south side, but also repeatedly offers views to the north, to the mountains around the Valchiavenna. After a short serpentine ascent, the path briefly descends to the lower of the two pastures of Agrogno, approx. 1650 m; behind the upper pasture, 1845 m, the "Sentiero dell'Orso" (from Colico 4.30 hrs.) leads off to the left. Its name is a reminder that the last bear on the Legnone was shot here in 1885. The summit trail takes the steep, rugged ridge of the Porta dei Merli, 2124 m, in serpentines and then leads just south of the ridge almost level to the brick bivouac of Ca' da Legn, 2148 m. Now you have the broad, slightly rocky summit ridge (ibexes!) directly in front of you: an hour along a winding trail and lots of scree to the Anticima, 2529 m, which marks the start
