La Retirada is more of a themed walk. We put on our shoes and follow what they call here “la route de l’exil,” in the footsteps of hundreds of thousands of Republicans who left Spain at the beginning of 1939 fleeing Franco's regime. Many stayed in the region, about 1/3 of the population in the Pyréneés Orientales department has Spanish roots. Feel free to take a day for it, the walk is 13 km and involves about 460 meters of ascent. You pass several monuments, statues, and information boards. A walk for the “aficionados.”
