Hike through quiet Bohemian forests This cross-border hike through lonely forests first takes us along the ridge trail at the foot of the Lausche, 792 m. Circular hike through a picturesque rock landscape Dominating Sloup v Čechách (Bürgstein) is the Einsiedlerstein, an approximately 35 m high sandstone rock block. Founded as a rock castle in the Middle Ages, it served as accommodation for several hermits from the end of the 17th century. You can visit the complex including the cloister and church via stairs and corridors carved into the rock.

We explore the densely forested mountains near our Czech neighbors, passing the idyllically situated Lauschebaude, the entrance to the Eisloch fissure cave, and isolated, bizarre bunker complexes dating from World War II. ▶ At the Rübezahlbaude 01 at the foot of the Lausche, we cross the hiking border crossing. Following the signpost on the Czech side, the trail heads toward “Chata Luž” (red line of the E3). As the route climbs, it soon reaches the few cottages of Myslivny (Hunter’s Village). Here, among other places, the rustic Chata Luž (Lauschebaude) 02, located right next to the trail sign, invites you to stop for a break. The hike then continues along the small paved road toward “Ledova Jeskyně” (“Ice Cave”) (green line). The scenic descent leads down to the little village of Horni Světlá (Ober-Lichtenwalde) 03 with its many half-timbered houses. We follow the main road and, at the edge of town, continue straight ahead on the road with the right-of-way (green line). About 300 m past the town exit sign, the trail marker directs the route to the left onto a forest path. In the forest, always follow the green line. (After just under 500 m, take the cross path to the right; a short while later, take the left at the indistinct fork.) The route eventually crosses the wooden bridge over the Hammersbach and reaches a paved road above the small Naděje (Hope) reservoir. Here, we turn right (green line) and immediately pass a solitary bunker complex from 1937 in the middle of the forest.A few meters further on, we take a short detour to the Eisloch (Ledova Jeskyně) 04, a fissure cave above the trail that is unfortunately not freely accessible. Continuing along the paved road, we ignore the red line branching off after 500 m. At the following intersections and forks, the route continues to follow the green trail marker. Finally, at a statue of St. John of Nepomuk, the patron saint of bridges—originally erected in 1846 by Chief Forester Joseph Walter of Nová Hut—we cross a road 05. Following the trail markers, the hike continues straight ahead on the other side. We soon leave the paved path and, at a right-hand curve (marked), continue straight ahead. The hike passes Weiser Pod Bouřnym at the foot of the 703-meter-high Bouřny and then follows the green line all the way to a shelter at a hiking parking lot 06 on a major road. At the signpost “Stožecke Sedlo,” we follow the blue trail uphill toward “Pod Ptačincem.” After just 150 m, the route veers right onto a root-covered trail (blue line). From the Pětikostelni viewing point ( 07 ), there is a beautiful view of the Tollenstein castle ruins. Later, in the dense beech forest (at the Pěnkavči vrch sign), we ignore the turnoff to Finkenkoppe 08, which, at 792 m, is the second-highest peak in the Zittau Mountains. The trail continues straight ahead here (blue line) on a path that soon becomes quite steep (marker!). At the Pod Ptačincem star junction 09, the hike turns sharply right uphill and is now guided by the red line (E3). Soon, you’ll pass the Dreiecker 10 mountain hut while continuing straight ahead. The trail turns into a root-strewn path that winds through an idyllic spruce forest. Shortly after, you’ll cross the border at the Schwarzes Tor and follow the trail along the German side of the border (red line). At Weiser Lužicka Cesta, we ignore the E3 trail branching off and follow the blue-marked ridge trail toward “Waltersdorf.” Soon the route reaches the Weiser Lauscheborn, named after the watering hole established here in 1823. Continuing straight downhill, we soon reach the Hubertusbaude 11, with its scenic sun terrace, as well as the Rübezahlbaude 01.
