Forecast for Constanța

The step through Constanța

We have nothing against sedentary vacations, mostly spent on the beach, on the hotel-beach route and back, possibly a „trip” to a terrace in the evening. But just as the doctor recommends a diversified diet for enviable immunity, we also recommend diversifying vacation activities to combat monotony and not lose your training.

Light hikes or walks save you if you don't know what to do at the seaside when it rains, but you also don't want to stay in the room, for example. Or when you don't know how to fill an entire day if you got bored with the beach.

On the one hand, there are walks between resorts that can harmoniously complement the vacation. Especially between Mangalia and Olimp, 2 Mai and Vama Veche, or Mamaia and Năvodari.

A kind of "from beach to beach" or from one resort to another, on foot, not by minibus or personal car. Walking directly on the long promenades, stepping a little towards the sea, or entering the resorts, such a walk is best done early in the morning for the aerosols, or as close to sunset as possible, when the air cools down.

Stops at souvenir kiosks along the way or at terraces are even recommended to take advantage of the shade.

What to do for a day in Constanța

Regardless of the season, Constanța generously offers you the chance for a long walk on the promenade and beyond.

Because almost all the attractions of this once-glorious port city, now somewhat neglected, are close to the promenade, you can't avoid the area.

Along the way, you'll find museums, modern terraces, parks, the Genoese Lighthouse, mosques or churches of cultural minorities, and, of course, the poet Ovid, forever thoughtful and sad, perched on his pedestal, as well as the casino, now in better condition than it has been in the last 50 years.

Like any respectable port city with a long maritime history, Constanța showcases its latest generation yachts and private boats in the tourist harbor - a must-see stop.

At one end of the city, the dolphinarium puts on shows all year round, and in the off-season you certainly don't have to wait in line or squeeze in.

Other places in Constanța, also to visit on foot

In the northern part of the county, there are some jewels dating back to eras for which many of us cannot even find a temporal reference. Although you can reach all of them either by car or by bike - you park and start walking.

First of all, the Dobrogea Gorges, millions of years old. Still unknown to mass tourism and yet somewhat more frequented today than a few years ago, thanks to online popularization. You don't even realize when you enter the gorges that you have already exited, unless you keep your eyes wide open. However, you can make as many stops as you want to walk along the limestone walls with worn peaks, to look with a child's curiosity through crevices. In some places you can climb above, but do not abuse the relief.

Then, the Jurassic caves nearby, frequented by photography enthusiasts, intensively studied by geologists and speleologists. The best known are Adam's Cave or the Bat Cave.

Last but not least, two sites with a religious significance: the Dionisie Exiguul Hermitage and the St. John Casian Cave, with the nearby lake and the monastery of the same name. You don't need to be passionate about religion to visit them: the mentioned caves are nearby, and the unmistakable landscape of Dobrogea spreads out at your feet, literally.
