Head-spinning depths of view from the highest peak of MontserratMontserrat ("sawn mountain") is undoubtedly the most mysterious and beautiful mountain in Catalonia. Geographically and in the Catalans' self-understanding, it is the heart of their land. The monastery with the black Madonna represents their most important sanctuary. The name Montserrat comes from a unique combination of rounded steep peaks and deep ravines, formed by the intense weathering of the rather soft conglomerate rock. Its hard-to-reach places have been inhabited since ancient times by hermits and monks, as evidenced by a whole series of caves and chapels still today.Montserrat rises abruptly over 1000 meters above the Central Catalan Basin, so from its peaks, practically all of Catalonia can be overlooked, from the Pyrenees in the north through the coastal mountains to far into the west and south. Climbing its highest point, the Cim de Sant Jeroni, is one of the most impressive mountain hikes ever.Montserrat is a paradise for canyoners and rock climbers, and the few trails crossing the massif usually require alpine skills. Except for the route described here, which on good paths offers a great insight into the somewhat broader forms of the eastern Montserrat and allows one to experience the meditative grandeur and solitude of this landscape. (The more difficult tour "Montserrat – Agulles, Coll de Port" shows the slender peaks, the Agulles, in the western Montserrat.)

Hustle and bustle and solitude side by side: southeastern MontserratA wide and somewhat imposing “Path of Mysteries” leads to the spectacularly situated Chapel of Santa Cova—and there, the stream of visitors comes to an abrupt halt: The flower-adorned high-altitude trail at the foot of the impressive cliffs of the Serra Llarga and high above the Llobregat Valley belongs solely to the hiker. A quiet path with stunning views both near and far.

Off-the-beaten-path trails through eastern MontserratThe highlight of this loop hike is the curious rock formation known as L’Elefant. This colossal rock is a popular climbing spot, but with a bit of a sense of direction and some scrambling skills, it can be climbed via the south face. From the top, a sweeping view opens up over the bizarre mountain range; to the north, the view extends all the way to the Pyrenees. On the subsequent loop trail, you’ll catch glimpses of the L’Elefant massif again and again from different perspectives and enjoy varied views of the eastern Montserrat region.

A Loop Hike in the Tebaida Region of MontserratAn exciting and full of surprises itinerary—that’s how one could briefly summarize the loop hike around the Sant Salvador massif in the eastern part of Montserrat. Peaceful high-altitude trails with fantastic views, towering rock spires lined up in rows, a rock hermitage, and a challenging steep ravine are just a few of the enticing highlights along a loop trail that passes through relatively secluded parts of the mountains for about half its length.
