Pure nature can be discovered on the official first stage of the anniversary hike of the Calw district. The Wolf Gorge, with its already alpine-like character, makes adventurer hearts beat faster. Over roots and stones, it goes through the gorge above Ernstmühl. The Monbach Valley is also a great experience for nature lovers. Here the path has already made its way a bit more and leads you through wildly romantic sections with water spots, cascades, and rock formations.

Forecast for Calw

10-day forecast

Where is Calw?

The district town of Calw is located a good 30 km west of Stuttgart in the northern Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg. The river Nagold flows through the town from south to north. If you come to Calw for hiking, there are plenty of well-marked trails in the forest and around the town to choose from.

What is Calw known for?

The most famous citizen of Calw was the writer and Nobel Prize winner for literature Hermann Hesse, who was born here in 1877. Traces of his work can be found in many places in the town, above all, of course, in the Hermann Hesse Museum in Calw.

But Calw is also famous – apart from its beautiful historic market square with many half-timbered houses – for the former Hirsau Monastery (St. Peter and Paul), which was one of the most important monasteries in Central Europe in the Middle Ages. Nowadays, the monastery is open for tours.

The poet's office is not to show the way, but above all to awaken longing. - Hermann Hesse

In the footsteps of Herman Hesse

Hesse was good at awakening longing: his numerous works are recognised all over the world. However, significantly fewer people are probably familiar with his birthplace of Calw. Yet one can safely assume that the author was inspired by his homeland.

Hiking played a major role for Hesse, who always envied those who could move freely in nature and enjoy the beautiful landscape. So get out there and explore the Calw surroundings - perhaps it will even inspire you to write a literary masterpiece yourself.

Wanderlust tears at my heart when I hear trees rustling in the evening wind. - Hermann Hesse

Hiking in the Black Forest Nature Park

The breathtaking Calw landscape is perfect for going on a hike and spending the day in magnificent nature - on a beautiful loop, time just flies by.

The foothills of the "Gäus", consisting of gentle hills and wide meadows, and the deep green coniferous forests of the Black Forest meet here. In the heart of the region, the town of Calw, the municipal forest opens directly into the wild landscape. Right from the centre, you are immediately on the trail!

The hiking trails around Calw are signposted by the Black Forest Association and regularly maintained by local clubs, so that nothing stands in the way of your hiking pleasure. From the "Genießerpfad" (leisure trail) to the "Premiumweg", there are excellent hikes to look forward to - the Black Forest region specialises in hikers.

Wanderung in umgekehrter Richtung.

Wanderschuhe sollte man schon anhaben.
