On the first weekend of spring, we went, together with dear friends, to the Heidenberg near Kammerstein. The great thing about the route we hiked there is that the roughly 7 km can even be managed by little hiking dwarfs. Therefore, we can recommend this hike starting from 3-4 years old. The mostly wide, well-developed forest paths climb very moderately when going upwards. For the most part, except for the rustic Quellensteig, the paths are even suitable for buggies. And all this takes place in a mysterious and fairy-tale-like forest, through which the legend hiking trail also runs. Some of the total 22 well-signposted legend stations are even on your way. That means you get, besides springs, a small cave, and wonderful forest paths, also exciting legends and stories that provide entertainment.

Extensive forests, a wildlife enclosure, and a legend hiking trailThe locals call the extensive pine forests "Steckerleswälder," which stretch like a mantle around the southern edge of Nuremberg – evidence of reforestation from the 19th century. Much older is the vast forest area around Heidenberg east of Kammerstein, which was already established around 800 as part of the newly founded royal court Schwabach. Later it became a deer enclosure for high-ranking noble hunts, and today hikers appreciate the shaded forests and hiking trails through the Heidenberg Forest. An information board provides an overview of the many hiking options, which can be freely combined.

Almost a PilgrimageThe Way of St. James from Nuremberg to Ulm is just one of many routes in Germany and Europe that ultimately lead to the tomb of the Apostle James in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. However, we intend to follow it only for a short stretch, because, as is well known, the journey itself is the destination—the act of being on the road and the encounter with oneself. And our route from Kammerstein to Abenberg is practically tailor-made for this. An easy route and clear wayfinding, combined with virtually no significant climbs, make for a meditative hike. But even those without a spiritual inclination will find joy on this hike through the Franconian landscape typical of the eastern Rangau region. By the time you’ve gazed out over the countryside from Abenberg Castle, you’ll be at peace with yourself and the world.
