Kammerstein – Abenberg Castle
The Way of St. James from Nuremberg to Ulm is just one of many routes in Germany and Europe that ultimately lead to the tomb of the Apostle James in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. However, we intend to follow it only for a short stretch, because, as is well known, the journey itself is the destination—the act of being on the road and the encounter with oneself. And our route from Kammerstein to Abenberg is practically tailor-made for this. An easy route and clear wayfinding, combined with virtually no significant climbs, make for a meditative hike. But even those without a spiritual inclination will find joy on this hike through the Franconian landscape typical of the eastern Rangau region. By the time you’ve gazed out over the countryside from Abenberg Castle, you’ll be at peace with yourself and the world.
From the “Mitte/Kreisstr.” bus stop in Kammerstein, we turn right onto Heidenbergstraße (marked with a “yellow line”). At the edge of town, take a slight left onto a road that leads into the nearby forest and takes us past the hiker’s parking lot to the St. James Chapel. This simple wooden structure, built in 2012–13, is located directly at the intersection with the Way of St. James from Nuremberg to Ulm, which we now follow to the right. Its marker (“yellow scallop shell on a blue background”) will reliably guide us all the way to Abenberg. First, the path descends slightly to the edge of the forest; there, turn left onto Heidenbergstraße and follow it through the charming village of Neppersreuth. Then we’ll follow the narrow road through fields and meadows to Road RH 4, which we’ll cross a short distance away.
