In the Günz Valley near Babenhausen—A long hike through fields, meadows, and marshland

In Babenhausen, we use the parking lot at Günz 1, where parking is free all day. We walk a few meters toward Hauptstraße, then turn left onto the street “Am Anger.” At the T-intersection near a yellow semi-detached house, we keep to the left; we do the same at the end of Frundsbergstraße. We cross the Günz River and immediately follow the signpost toward Kettershausen. We walk along the river for about 2 km, then come to the Günz Bridge 2. Instead of crossing the river, we follow the white-and-yellow trail markers to the left. At a yield sign, we turn right, and after a few meters, at another yield sign, we turn right again. We hike north on a wide gravel path between fields and meadows. We pass the entrance to the magnificent Jägerhof—shortly afterward, we follow the signs for “Gerstenberg-Runde" toward Kettershausen. The white-and-yellow trail markers reliably lead us northward to a rest area 3 near a wayside cross. We continue to follow the white-and-yellow signs. We stay in the Günz Valley. When we reach the sports facilities in Kettershausen, the white-and-yellow signs lead us to the village. There is a bench next to a wayside cross 4. At this point, we leave the white-and-yellow trail and walk straight ahead along the edge of the forest toward the north.  At the “Hundehotel,” we cross the road from Kettershausen to Unterroth and walk straight ahead onto Waldstraße. After passing an orchard meadow on the right side of the path, we keep left at a T-intersection and right at the next intersection, so that we walk into the forest. At the end of the path, we catch a glimpse of parts of the Kettershausener Ried Nature Reserve on our right. 5. Small areas of lowland bog have formed here in the marshy valley floor of the Günz River. We walk toward the church tower in Tafertshofen and turn right at the nature reserve sign by the last trees. We walk along a drainage ditch to a road and turn right onto it. We pass between the buildings of the former Riedmühle 6 (please note the historic field cross) and cross two bridges—then we turn right onto the road heading toward Mohrenhausen.  At the second power pole, we keep to the right onto the bike path, turn left at the next intersection, and turn right again just before the road, following the edge of the forest. At the entrance to Mohrenhausen, we turn left and walk up to Lärchenstraße, where we head south through the town. We pass the water tower and a field chapel—shortly after it, a signpost directs us to the Konrad Chapel 7, which is well worth seeing.  From the Bruder-Konrad Chapel, we head back to the road and, just before it, turn right and descend into the valley. We come to a rest area—there we turn left and follow the edge of the forest southward for about one kilometer. After passing the tennis courts in Kettershausen, be careful: Behind the garages, just before the road, we turn left onto an inconspicuous path that runs alongside some spruce trees. At the end of Haldeweg, we turn right. We pass Café Ideenreich 8 (open Wed–Sun), then head west across the two branches of the Günz River to a wayside cross, where we turn left.    At the sports field, we turn left and follow the river southward. At the Nepomuk wayside shrine 9, we cross the Günz. At the second opportunity after the bridge, we turn right. We hike southwest past farm barns. Before the power pole, we take the path to the left. We cross a road marked with a bike path sign and walk along a long left-hand curve to the end of a meadow orchard j.   Finally, we walk a short distance southward on the paved road and turn left onto a winding meadow path. It leads toward two silos. Behind the silos, we turn right; at the wayside cross with benches, we turn left. Just before entering Babenhausen, we come across white-and-yellow markings and follow them to the town center. We visit St. Andreas Church and the Fugger Castle k with its castle park before walking along the main street to the Günz Bridge and returning to the parking lot at Günz 1.

Forecast for Buch

One of the most popular hiking tours in Buch leads through the picturesque forest path to the nearby Neuschwanstein Castle. On this route, hiking enthusiasts can not only admire the impressive architecture of the castle, but also enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain landscape. This tour is particularly recommended during spring or autumn, when the foliage of the trees is ablaze with colour.

For families with children, on the other hand, a leisurely hike along the river Iller is suitable. The well-signposted hiking trail leads past small waterfalls and always offers nice picnic spots for a relaxing rest. In summer, you can even take a refreshing dip here and end the day perfectly.

Another highlight are the various hiking routes around the nearby Swabian Alb Nature Park. Here, experienced hikers can put their stamina to the test and explore challenging routes, while beginners should rather choose short walks to marvel at the fascinating flora and fauna.

Whether you are an experienced hiker or a beginner, Buch offers the right hiking tour for every taste and ability. From easy walks along the rivers to challenging routes through the mountains - everyone will find their personal favourite hike here.

Schöne Wanderstrecke in ruhigem Waldgebiet.
