This Moselle classic was still missing from our list of tours, the Calmont via ferrata on the steepest vineyard in Europe. Sprinkled with numerous climbing sections, the route runs along the Moselle slopes on a short but intense tour with more than 600 meters of elevation gain. At the same time, almost constant magnificent views are offered, for which one should take time. The tour starts in Ediger-Eller, one of the possible entry points to the Calmont trail. Behind the first shelter with a view, the via ferrata begins with the first sections, which include steps and ladders. Further on, the route goes over rocky climbing sections, narrow slate paths, always along the steep vineyard slopes, but these are always well secured. This section up to Bremm is about 4 km long and repeatedly offers new, magnificent views of the narrowest Moselle bend. For this part, sure-footedness, a head for heights, and appropriate footwear are, of course, mandatory, and one should bring a bit of climbing experience. Behind Bremm, the Calmont high path leads uphill, from which the view over the wide expanses of the region becomes even clearer. The best view of the entire Moselle bend is just below the summit cross on one of the rocky outcrops. The route here then turns towards Ellerbach and passes through enchanted paths in the oak forest. Those who prefer a few more rocky sections can stay on the high path towards Eller. For campers, there are 2 motorhome harbors on the Moselle shore near Ediger Eller, only one of which also provides electricity. In Bremm, there is also a parking spot at a winery. During the winter months, the electrical boxes near the shore are often dismantled, which is why we stayed in Zell at the campsite. Highly recommended, even if you cannot start the hike directly from there. However, from there it goes directly over the pedestrian bridge into the old town. Have fun, Olaf All tours as always at:

In Europe’s steepest vineyard: We make our way through the steep slopes of the Bremmer Calmont along magnificent steep trails, over rocks, and up ladders. The view over the Moselle loop, with the ruins of Stuben Abbey, is fantastic. It seems unbelievable that winemakers can work here. The vineyards have a slope of up to 68 degrees. The Calmont via ferrata is rightly one of the most popular trails along the Moselle; it’s very busy here on sunny weekends.

Scenically, this route undoubtedly marks one of the absolute highlights of the Moselle. Those looking for challenging climbs, numerous narrow, sometimes secured paths, and a good dose of adrenaline will get their money's worth here. We are moving through the steepest vineyards in Europe and are rewarded with views so spectacular that they burn deep into the memory. This tour is not an easy walk but an alpine adventure amidst a cultural landscape thousands of years old.
