Where avalanches thunder in winter The steep grassy mountains in the immediate vicinity of the Sentumalpe are immediately intimidating. In the wider area around the Sentumalpe, the rock formations are full of character and even the Schesaplana makes an appearance. In between, the typical scattered settlements of the Grosses Walsertal valley are a welcome sight.

On old paths through the outer Große Walsertal The historic Walserweg, along which one repeatedly finds explanations about the culture and history of the valley, is a village connection created by the valley farmers before the era of road construction.

The course of the Via Alpina here corresponds entirely to the so-called Walserweg. Usually slightly descending, you follow the course of the Lutz over meadows and through mixed mountain and floodplain forests, which are still largely preserved in their original state. The small idyllic villages with the beautiful farms invite you to rest.

In the towns, hamlets, and scattered settlements of the Great Walser Valley, traces of the first settlers can still be found today. The memory of the immigrants from the Swiss Valais is particularly cherished here. Information signs along the historic Walser Trail provide interesting facts.> This section of the Walser Trail begins in the center of Thüringerberg01 at the Biosphere Park office. We have to walk a good kilometer along the sidewalk out of town and down the main road into the valley until the Walser Trail marker points to a hiking trail down to the right, leading to the “Im Loch” parcel. Following the trail markers northward, we come to the Rottobel Stairs and cross the torrent’s gorge via the steep steel staircase. The trail continues along a narrow forest path until it meets a quiet residential street. Follow this road to the “Sportplatz” location. At the St. Gerold sports field, we turn left and descend a narrow trail into the Hölltobel. Passing a small waterfall and crossing an iron bridge, we traverse the rocky ravine. Until 1878, the stream powered a sawmill and a gristmill for the provostry. Then the road to St. Gerold was built, cheap flour found its way into the valley, and the mill fell silent and fell into disrepair. The old name for the Hölltobel was Klostertobel or Mühletobel. Through a shady mixed forest, we reach the St. Gerold Provostry02, which serves as the spiritual, cultural, and social center of the biosphere reserve. The monastery church and the monastery garden are worth seeing. We leave St. Gerold downhill on a wide path. Soon our path narrows, reaches a stream, and runs for a while along a contour line through meadows until the white-red-white marker points sharply to the right onto the Walserweg toward Blons. The narrow trail through woods and meadows crosses several more small ravines before descending steeply into the Rüffitobel03. On the other side of a bridge, the trail climbs gently again. The trail remains narrow and shaded, mostly through the woods, and leads steadily uphill to Blon 04. After a particularly steep section and crossing a steep meadow slope, keep to the left and continue hiking uphill along the edge of the woods until you reach the small village of Blons. Here, pass the village shop and follow an inconspicuous path downhill to a few houses, where you keep left. You should pay particularly close attention to the white-red-white trail markers here, as the path is not always clearly visible. Crossing meadows, passing through the forest, and crossing small ravines again, the trail winds up and down until it reaches a small paved road. We follow this road to the left, passing the few houses of Untervalentschina. The Walserweg continues well past the sports field toward Garsella05. Here you reach the Lutzbach for the first time, which you cross via a car bridge. On the orographic left bank of the river, the trail is initially flat, then ascends—first on a wide path, later following the “Walserweg and Wiesenweg” sign, which turns sharply to the left-center onto a narrow trail leading to the sports field. From here, we hike along a small paved road over the stone bridge and, after a final ascent, reach the village of Sonntag06.
