The Laternsertal valley is the perfect place for a break in the mountains and boasts spectacular mountain scenery, unspoilt nature and wonderful hiking trails. The valley lies on the south-western edge of the Bregenzerwald in Vorarlberg. With the Furkajoch road you can reach high starting points and have a wonderful panorama right from the start. The Gapfohl chairlift is also a welcome support for hikes in the direction of Hoher Freschen and Matona.

Hiking in Laternsertal: Starting point Laterns-Thal

To reach the Laternsertal valley, follow the winding road that leads from Rankweil up into the mountains. The connection is also very good by bus, which is why the Laternsertal valley is easy to reach even without your own car. The main village of Laterns-Thal is the starting point for a number of beautiful and well-known hikes:

  • Üble Gorge: The Frutz, the river in Laternsertal, forms an impressive world of rock and water here, which can be reached by different routes. Either directly from Laterns-Thal, or über the well-known Netschelweg, which begins already in Rankweil.
  • Walserkamm: On the southern side of the valley, the peaks of the Walserkamm rise steeply and forbiddingly into the sky. Once you have crossed the valley floor, there are several tours to choose from, such as the one to the Dünser Älpele.
  • On the Alpwegkopf: Popular destination from Laterns-Thal or Batschurns
  • .

Innerlaterns: With the cable car to the hike

The valley station of the Gapfohl chairlift is in Innerlaterns. The cable car covers 400 metres of altitude and is therefore ideal if you want to reach one of the peaks but do not have enough time or are not fit enough. Among the well-known destinations are the Matona and the Hohe Freschen. Shorter tours lead to the Falben or the Nob. There are also good opportunities to stop for a bite to eat: either right at the mountain station in the Falba Stuba or the Berghof Laterns, or after a short hike in the Alpwegkopfhaus.

When is the cable car in Laterns open in summer?

The Laterns-Gapfohl cable car is only open on weekends and public holidays during the summer season. In the high season also on Fridays. It is best to check beforehand if you are not sure.

Hikes from Bad Laterns

After Innerlaterns, the road narrows and leads along steep slopes to the end of the valley. Around the small Bad Laterns inn, which used to be a public bathhouse, you can set out on a hike in all directions. Depending on your physical condition and desire, you can take tours with many metres of altitude or set off for a leisurely round around the inn.

A popular destination is the Freschenhaus at 1846m altitude. The restaurant can be used as a base for further tours around the Hohe Freschen, or can be reached in the course of a day hike.

Hiking on the Furkajoch between Laterns and Damüls

The Furkajoch road connects Damüls with Bad Laterns. The pass has an altitude of 1761m and is popular with racing cyclists and motorcyclists alike. But the pass is also a good starting point for hikers. Numerous hiking trails start along the road. You can quickly reach the tree line and enjoy magnificent views of the Vorarlberg Alps.

Due to the high starting altitude, you will soon be hiking in alpine terrain, which is why you need to be fit and sure-footed. A great tour, which is more of a mountain hike, leads over the Walser ridge to the Gerenspitze. Once you have checked off the hikes in the Laternsertal valley, another area opens up on the eastern side of the Furkajoch around Damüls with countless wonderful hikes.
