The Bavarian Forest is predestined as a hiking region due to its current low mountain range form. Hiking in the Bavarian Forest means climbing peaks such as the Großen Arber or the Lusen, going on a voyage of discovery in the Bavarian Forest National Park or gazing from the numerous lookout towers far above the tops of the largest cohesive forest mountain range in the whole of Europe.

Forecast for Bavarian Forest

10-day forecast

Where is a good place to go hiking in the Bavarian Forest?

The Bavarian Forest offers wonderful hiking tours in all regions. Particularly popular is the hike up the Grosse Arber. This with its 1,456 m is the highest peak in the Bavarian Forest and at the same time the highest mountain in Bavaria to be found outside the Alps. To climb the King of the Bavarian Forest, the holiday resort of Bodenmais or the Grosse Arbersee are good starting points.

On the loop, you will hike through the nature reserve around the Grosse Arber and bypass the 400 m high Arberseewand. At the vantage point Mittagsplatzl it is worth taking a break on the rather difficult ascent. Then continue on to the Großen Arber, where you will be rewarded for your efforts with a magnificent view and the chance to stop for a bite to eat. The Goldsteig premium hiking trail takes hikers back to the Großen Arbersee. If you would like to extend the loop, you can also include the Kleiner Arbersee lake on your hiking tour.

What is a must-see in the Bavarian Forest?

Highlights in the Bavarian Forest are above all the Great and Small Arbersee lakes, both of which were formed during the last ice age. The floating islands on the lakes are particularly interesting. These have no fixed connection to the ground and not only rise with the water level, but can also change their position depending on the wind direction. The small islands are covered with typical moorland flora. However, you cannot walk on them, as there is a danger to life. At both lakes you have the opportunity to stop at a restaurant and enjoy the view of the water.

The Small Arbersee can be hiked around in about 40 minutes, while the Great Arbersee takes about an hour. At the latter, there is now also a nature trail that takes you around the lake. You don't have to climb almost any metres. Therefore, these short hikes are also suitable for children, beginners or an after-work round.

Hiking tours for summit strikers

The Bavarian Forest is a great place for those who like to hike. The low mountain range offers hikers not only the Great Arber, but also well-known mountain peaks such as the Great Rachel, the Lusen, the Dreisessel massif or the Great Osser, which can be climbed. The Pröller and the Große Falkenstein round off the offer.

For these hiking tours in the National Park, you should generally be in good shape and sure-footed. If you master the tours, you will not only be rewarded with beautiful views at the highest point, but also great views of the Bavarian Forest along the way. Hikers will also find refreshment stops on most of the hikes.

Nature experiences along the hiking trails in the Bavarian Forest

About two kilometres north of Bodenmais lie the Rieslochfällen, the largest waterfalls in the Bavarian Forest. Especially after the snow has melted or after heavy rain, they offer an impressive spectacle. If you start in St. Englmar, you can hike the equally attractive Nagelsteiner Wasserfälle, which will delight you with its numerous small waterfalls.

Nature lovers will also be captivated by the wildly romantic Steinklamm gorge. The hiking trail along the Große Ohe enchants with a deep gorge, rushing waters and idyllic nature. Another beautiful experience is a hike through the depths of the primeval forest in the Bavarian Forest National Park. Rest and relaxation are definitely not missed out on this round trip.

Hikes for beginners and families

Little hikers really come into their own in the Bavarian Forest. The Bavarian Forest National Park, in particular, offers numerous hiking trails and attractions for little explorers. There they can follow in the footsteps of the wild animals, follow the babbling brooks and let off steam at interactive stations. A real highlight is the treetop path, which offers a magnificent view of the valleys and mountains of the region from lofty heights. The trail has a length of 1,300 metres.

Many of the hikes in the Bavarian Forest are not too demanding in terms of physical condition and technique and are therefore also easily doable for beginners, e.g. hiking through the Englmarbach Valley or a hiking tour up the Birkenberg near Maibrunn. Due to the variety of hiking trails, the Bavarian Forest is guaranteed to have something for everyone.

Which place in the Bavarian Forest is the most beautiful?

Bodenmais is a popular holiday resort in the Bavarian Forest, which is also an excellent starting point for several hikes. In addition to the Rieslochfällen, the health resort is also known for the Silberberg, where visitors can tour the mine. The culture of the Bavarian Forest is also evident here in the glassworks. The filigree works of art make ideal souvenirs to take home. Other places worth visiting are Cham, Zwiesel, Regen and Furth im Wald.

Arber erfordert etwas Geschick.

Kostenpflichtiger Parkplatz in Eck (2 €).
