Exciting, promising hike to the famous »Loch«The Sierra de Bèrnia, up to 1126 m high and 9 km long including the Morro del Toix spur, is one of the most striking mountain massifs of the Costa Blanca. With a little imagination, the nearly 5 km long, jagged mountain ridge looks like the back of a dragon. A classic is the circular hike around the ridge and through the »Forat«, the natural rock tunnel. Less known is this ascent on the south side of the Bèrnia. After a leisurely start on a forest road, it goes up on a partly alpine-like trail to the huge tunnel outlet. From there, a varied path leads back along the rock ridge. Hardly any other tour offers more views of mountains and coast!

Through the famous "hole" in the mountain ridgeThe Sierra de Bèrnia stretches over 11 km from Callosa d’En Sarria to the coast between Calp and Altea. Its 1126 m high peak is considered the closest "vertical kilometer" to the coast on the entire Iberian Peninsula. Clouds often get caught on the almost 5 km long picturesque jagged main ridge and rain down on one side or the other. The main attraction of the tour is the Forat de Bèrnia, a natural rock tunnel about 20 m long through the mountain. Its south exit frames the view of the Altea Bay and the Sierra Helada like a theater curtain. From there, we hike along the sunny south slope under the picturesque ridge to the Fort de Bèrnia. Finally, a scenic path and a beautiful, shady forest trail await. A very popular hike!

On an ancient paved mule trail up Altea’s local mountainSince time immemorial, people have used the Bèrnia for hunting; on small alpine pastures, they raised goats and cultivated wheat, grapes, almonds, carobs, and figs. The Camí de les Revoltes (roughly translated as “Winding Path”), a stone-paved, artfully laid-out trail, made the ascent easier for people and pack mules. Starting at the Font de la Barca picnic area, we take a leisurely hike along a scenic forest trail on the southern flank of the Bèrnia. An exciting trail then takes us to the Cova de la Serp, a rock formation said to resemble a snake. The final 4.5 km run through a residential area.

Beautiful walk that starts at the car park near the picnic area in Altea la Vella. The route to the starting point alone is worth the effort. The walk mostly goes over stony paths, sometimes some rocks. For the experienced hiker, the climb is tough but quite doable. Of course, you can walk through the tunnel briefly before starting the descent. Here too, it applies that for an experienced hiker, the descent is steep, some parts quite steep but generally manageable. Good shoes are a must.
