History: We have a still relatively young winery. In 1986, I reactivated the grandfather's vineyard with 2.5 hectares and have been working according to ecological guidelines from the very beginning. The vineyard area has since been expanded to about 30 hectares. Since 1987, we have been a member of the BIOLAND association.
Location: We are located in the South Palatinate wine region. Our winery is embedded in the locality of Böchingen. Böchingen lies on the Southern Wine Route at the transition from the Rhine Plain to the Palatinate Forest. The vines thrive on gentle hills around our village in very different soils, from deep loess-loam soil to heavy chalk loam soil and light Buntsandstein weathering soil on the edge of the Haardt.
Winemaking: Our vineyard areas are cultivated according to biological principles. We are a member of the BIOLAND association, according to whose guidelines we work. By refraining from chemical-synthetic pesticides, easily soluble mineral fertilizers, and herbicides, we aim to let our vines thrive in as natural an environment as possible, protect our nature, and conserve our environment.
The cellar development: The maturation of the wines in our cellar takes place with minimal technical effort. The white wines mostly age in stainless steel, while the red wines exclusively in traditional oak barrels ranging from 600 to 10,000 liters. Our top red wines are stored in barriques. During vinification, we pay meticulous attention to gentle processing of our grapes, temperature-controlled fermentation, and minimal technical intervention all the way to the bottling of the finished wines. These measures shape the character of our white wines, resulting in clear, clean bouquets and finely structured aromas, combined with a fresh and pleasantly soft style. When vinifying red wines, we gladly draw inspiration from the methods of our Southern European colleagues. The extraction of color occurs exclusively through traditional maceration. The spectrum of our red wines is vast, ranging from simple, light table wine to voluminous, full-bodied, and color-intensive red wine.
Operational Philosophy: My environmental awareness was shaped by the "Anti Nuclear Power Plant Movement," which I identified with as a young person. This environmental consciousness later influenced my professional work. Thus, our philosophy is based on two pillars: First: a production technique that is environmentally friendly and protects nature. Second: a maximum of wine quality to which we feel personally committed.
