If it rains... There’s no particular problem with this hike on a rainy day, as long as visibility is good for the trail. The trail is high and steep, so rainy days have a good chance of being snowy days, and you might want to check locally before starting out.
If you want to shorten the day, you can skip the hut but still make the loop on the return traverse from Moiry, glacier back to Moiry, barrage.
Wegbeschreibung
- The hike to Moiry hut is spectacular, and can be either a moderate hike, or a short day if you take the bus to the Moiry reservoir. From the lake, the trail heads first gently back into this high hanging valley, and then climbs to the Moiry hut, perched on a rocky promontory surrounded by high peaks and glaciers.
- From Moiry barrage: We suggest you start with the bus to the Moiry reservoir - the last bus stop past the end of the reservoir is called Moiry, glacier. Already wild, looking to the back of the valley, you’ll see the tumbing Moiry glacier ahead of you.
- Rising on the east side of the valley, the trail to cabane de Moiry is signed, and should take a bit over an hour to an hour and a half, climbing up on a beautiful trail along the old lateral moraine wall of the glacier, with gorgeous views of the glacier and mountains ahead.
- There are some steep dropoffs as you walk along the moraine wall, and again as you skirt the tiny lake captured by the moraine wall before the steepest ascent, with a cable at one point to help you along.
- About 30 minutes into your ascent, you cross an area that often has a large, very steep snow field late into the summer. This snow doesn’t see much sun and can be icy and very slick in cold temperatures, so be very careful. This is a good place for hiking poles, and can be particularly slick in the morning on your descent.
- The last 30 minutes are very up a rocky hillside, eventually crossing through an area of large boulders and depositing you directly at the beautiful Moiry hut. Moiry has perhaps the most beautiful dining room view you’ll ever see.
- Leave the Moiry hut the same way you came, backtracking down the moraine wall toward the Moiry reservoir. When you are 30-40 minutes from the hut, about half-way to the reservoir, keep right at your first opportunity on the small trail leading to Col de Sorebois/Zinal. This is a beautiful balcony walk that contours the hillside beneath the Garde de Bordon and Corne de Sorebois peaks. You’ll climb for short stretches, as this traverse contains about 600 ft of your elevation gain, but you’ll hardly notice it. You mainly trend slightly downhill for the next hour through the meadowy hillside with the gorgeous turquoise lake below you.
- As you reach the north end of the reservoir, turn left to head down to the restaurant and bus stop at the head of the dam. There are buses from this stop (Moiry, barrage) back to Grimentz. You should check schedules beforehand at sbb.ch, since there are only a few buses each afternoon and you don't want to miss them.
