Chester is one of the best-preserved walled cities in Britain. To get to know the historic city, you can follow a 3 km-long (2 miles) circuit walk along the ancient Roman walls.
The iconic black-and-white timber buildings capture a unique atmosphere. Some of which are originals from the Middle Ages, some are Victorian restorations, nevertheless, all have a beautiful charm and make a great backdrop for a shopping spree or a leisurely city walk.
Pay a visit to the Chester Cathedral and learn about the architecture from the 11th to the 16th century. Although the Cathedral was majorly restored in the 19th century, the original structure and the architectural developments are still visible. The Cathedral frequently hosts concerts and the garden makes for an excellent, calming getaway place.
Visiting Chester Zoo is a great experience for the whole family. It is home to over 12,000 animals and helps to protect endangered species, which makes it the leading zoological garden in the UK.
If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, you don’t have to go far. Along the River Dee or the Shropshire Union Canal, there are plenty of traffic-free paths, for example along old railway tracks, to explore on foot and by bike.
