Ural Mountains

The Ural Mountains stretch for almost 2,400 km in a north-south direction through the middle west of Russia and represent the border between Europe and Asia. The mountain range, which is only about 50 km wide, has high and low mountain ranges and crosses three climate zones. The Ural Mountains are divided into five mountain ranges and are especially known for ore mining. Nowadays, however, some protected areas provide an impressive nature that attracts outdoor fans.

The Urals are better known for their grey industrial sites, which were created by the mining of ore and mineral salt in the vicinity of the mountains. But that is by far not all there is to see here. For some years now, new areas in the Urals have been repeatedly designated as national parks or nature reserves to protect the beautiful nature and local species, but also to attract nature lovers and outdoor sports enthusiasts to the mountains. Especially in the south of the Urals, there are enough mountains that allow a view up to the horizon without disturbing places, roads or power lines.

The region around the city of Perm, which has numerous rivers and caves, is very popular. In the city itself, Russian customs and traditions have developed without any outside influence, as Perm has been closed off for a long time due to the local military industry. Water sports enthusiasts are attracted by the river Tschussowaja with its rocky banks. The current is rather mild so that even beginners are in good hands here. In summer, however, the water level sometimes drops so much that you run aground.

The protected areas are a paradise for hikers. The national park Sjuratkul includes several mountain ranges, brooks and rivers, a big mountain lake and the untouched taiga. The varied landscapes in the park can be easily explored on foot. The Orenburg Nature Reserve is the home of wild horses and is even more protected. Those who have acquired the special permit are happy about huge steppes on the southern edge of the Ural mountains far away from civilization.
