Sudetes

The Sudeten Mountains are a mountain range on the border between Poland and the Czech Republic and to a small extent also Germany. With a length of 310 km, they connect the Erzgebirge with the Carpathians. The Sudeten Mountains are divided into several massifs. The Krkonoše and the Old Father Mountains are the best known. In the Krkonoše Mountains, there is also the highest elevation of the Sudeten Mountains, Mount Sněžka/Śnieżka with 1,603 m. There is a well-developed network of tourist routes leading through the mountains.

The natural landscape of the Sudeten Mountains impresses with unusual rock formations, extinct volcanoes and picturesque gorges. Waterfalls and caves can also be found all over the massifs. The mountains are dominated by mixed forest in the lower areas, followed by spruce forest and above the forest line by alpine pastures, which are partly interrupted by raised bogs. In the Sudeten Mountains, there are medieval castles and churches and, due to the border location, which repeatedly caused warlike unrest, there are also defensive structures and fortifications.
