Out & about in timiș, nearby timișoara
Though Timișoara gets most of the tourist marketing in Timiș - on merit -, it would be a shame not to explore nearby places. Most tourist attractions are within a one-hour drive from the city. So choose comfortable accommodation in Timișoara and set off to see everything the area offers.
By kayak, or by bike, from the lowlands to the top of the mountain
Large agricultural fields dominate most of the landscape in the eastern part of Timiș County. Meadows and marshlands, rich in floristic and faunal species specific to delta areas, make for a surprise apparition in some areas.
Lunca Mureșului Natural Park, located on the border with Arad County, is ideal for photography or birdwatching. The park administration comes with helpful advice and provides kayaks for more convenient exploration of certain areas on the Mureș River (for rent from the visitor center, Arad County).
Additionally, the bike route Arad - Pecica - Sânpetru German - Cenad crosses the whole natural park and offers an overview of the area.
A visit perhaps more suitable for families with small children targets the swamps and the ornithological reserve in Satchinez. The recipe for an active, adventurous day here includes a bike ride from Timișoara (optional), followed by a walk through the reservation. Tip: Compete with one another in counting the number of birds each family member sees!
Starting from either Nădrag or Luncanii de Jos, not far from the lake, you can set off on a hike towards the main peak in the Poiana Ruscă Mountains - Padeș Peak (1374m). Do not underestimate the hike: you need 4-5 hours to reach the alpine plateau. Your effort is rewarded with an excellent view of the Retezat, Godeanu, or Cerna Mountains. Following Valea lui Liman, from Luncanii de Jos, there's a Via Ferrata route - Turnul lui Liman.
Follow the wineyards in Timiș
If Timișoara makes the beer, the Banat Vineyard sprawls northwest of the city, producing a few famous wine varieties every year. Try a weekend road trip to taste the local wines and enjoy some adventure.
Start at the Murani Domains, where a lesson in architecture and history awaits; continue with Herneacova, for the adventure park; and only then you get to the wine: the Petrovaselo and Recaș wineries. Kids will surely have great fun in the adventure parks, while for the rest of the family, the fun will come only to the tasting.
From Timișoara to the border and back
Timiș County has a couple of interesting collaborative tourist projects with neighboring Serbia: a bicycle track, and a tourist boat route on the Bega Canal.
Starting from Timișoara, the bike path and the canal run parallel up to the border with Serbia; soon, you'll also be allowed to cross beyond.
The Timișoara-Zrnejanin bike path measures 70km, 37 km on the Romanian side. The navigable canal is 114 km long, and the Vaporetto tourist boats glide easily on the canal in the summer season.
For now, you can enjoy the routes on the Romanian side; crossing into Serbia is blocked but a cross-border point should be in place soon. However, for shopping or gas refills, the highway remains your best option.
Another unique element with lots of (ignored) touristic potential, is the point where the Romanian border meets the borders of Serbia and Hungary. Called Triplex Confinum, the point is marked by a peculiar monument that you can photograph. The landscape is not a memorable one, but at least the place is a symbolic one.
Visiting the Germans in Timis
Almost half of the territory of Timiș County was, in the past, inhabited by Swabians. Settled in Banat in the 18th century, the Swabians returned, for the most part, to Germany or Austria after the world wars. But their cultural heritage remained.
A day trip on the picturesque route Charlottenburg - Bogda - Altringen takes you through a lovely area, where you can visit the local communities, and the historical monument village of Charlottenburg, and enjoy the local cuisine. You can also try their route by bike, including as a circuit via Buzad. Founded by Germans, Charlottenburg became famous for its round shape; the Swabians are no longer here, but the romantic atmosphere has been preserved.
More comprehensive historical details about the Swabians can be found at the local museum in Lenauheim, in the opposite direction, about 47km from Timisoara.
