Paysages extra !

This is probably the best hike we have done in this area!!! It easily deserves 7 stars. Great views the whole time, not a dull moment, fantastic panorama at the top. And we saw marmottes, a herd of deer and a couple of vultures that flew a few meters from us.

Col de Diable (2430m) This is your last pass above 2000 m. It is named "Pass of the Devil", because for centuries nobody dared to pass it to the Vallée. After this col the landscape will change dramatically. From here on until Monaco no water to be found, so take plenty with you. A little after the Redoute you will come below 2000m. Camp d'Argent (1800m) The Gite is the only place to stay, but it is pleasant. They have dorms and a campsite.

Baisse de Valmasque (2550m) This is your last pass above 2500 m. After here you will enter the Vallée des Merveilles, where in the late stone-age magicians carved inscriptions in the rocks. Do not miss these! Large iron poles will direct you to places where they can be seen. Refuge des Merveilles (2130m) This hut is packed full of tourist groups during the high season. But 100m off the hut there is a free camp-site. You can still get meals in the Refuge.

The Cicerone "Hikes in Alps Maritime" marks this walk as a "Must Do" in this area. We agree. It is an interesting and varied walk, with beautiful views, nice paths and a great variety of scenery.

NOTE: the M94 road that runs from St Martin Vesubie to the start of the walk has been partially swept by floods. In September 2023 they are still working on replacement. You can get by "normal" car to about 4km from the refuge, then, after walking for about 2km, take the side path and join the actual walk. Or, if you are happy to drive on an unpaved road, you can get to the refuge and start the designated walk. The walk itself is excellent: it takes you to a beautiful, unspoiled area of the natural park with great views. You may see squirrels and deer on your way.
