Sights in the Kyffhäuser
In addition to nature, Kyffhäuser offers a number of sights to see. At the end of the 19th century, the Kyffhäuser Monument was built on the Kyffhäuserburgberg. It is located on the ruins of the imperial Castle Kyffhausen, which can still be seen all around. On a promontory in the north of the mountain you can find the castle ruins of Rothenburg and the Palatinate Tilleda on the Pfingstberg in Tilleda.
A reminder of the German Peasant War is provided by the monumental painting "Early Bourgeois Revolution in Germany" near Bad Frankenhausen, which depicts the decisive battle of May 15, 1525, 123 m wide and 14 m high. The work of art by Werne Tübke is housed in a rotunda and is one of the largest panel paintings in the world.
A natural highlight is the Barbarossa Cave near Rottleben, one of two accessible anhydrite caves in the world. The underground lakes of the cave shimmer green due to the gypsum content. With a little imagination you can see the sleeping emperor Friedrich I. Barbarossa in the cave, who according to the Kyffhäuser saga waits here for his return.

Activities in the Kyffhäuser
The Kyffhäuser is a popular hiking area. On shady paths you can also walk in the heat in summer. Popular are the routes from Korbach via Sondershausen to the Kyffhäuser Monument on the Barbarossa Path, the main hiking trail Eisenach–Wernigerode, the Kaiserweg from Bad Harzburg to Tilleda as well as the Fairy Grottoes-Kyffhäuser-Path.
Well-known are also sporting events such as the Kyffhäuserberglauf – distances over the marathon and half-marathon distance as well as 14 km and 6 km. The Kyffhäuser mountain triathlon is also popular, in which you first swim in the Kelbra reservoir, then cycle up to Kyffhäuser and finally run again at the reservoir.
