Mountains occupy 72% of the prefecture's area, and six of them, Zao, Gassan, Chokai, Azuma, Iide and Asahi, are among the 100 most famous mountains in Japan. Surrounded by beautiful mountains, the abundant Mogami River flows through the Yonezawa, Yamagata, and Shinjo basins and the Shonai Plain. Yamagata is blessed with a rich and beautiful natural environment, where the nostalgic Tohoku landscape is still widely preserved.
There are a variety of outdoor activities to be enjoyed in the prefecture. From rafting down the Mogamigawa River, which Matsuo Basho wrote about in his poem, to picking Yamagata's famous cherries and other fruits, to snowshoeing with Kanjiki, you can fully enjoy the nature that Yamagata's climate and climate have to offer.
