Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan, covers 1/6 of the prefecture's land area, and is surrounded by mountains such as the Hira and Suzuka mountain ranges, which are rich in water and greenery. There is a wealth of attractions to enjoy nature to the full, such as the Omi-Hachiman suigo tour on a rowing boat, lake cruises, autumn leaf viewing, and skiing.
Shiga was also a strategic point on the Tokaido Highway, the Higashiyama Road, and the Hokuriku Road. It is said that "He who conquers Omi conquers the whole country," and Shiga has long flourished in terms of culture and economy, and has also been the scene of many wars and battles. Hikone Castle and the ruins of Azuchi Castle, which are famous for their yurukyan character Hikonyan, are among the many historical buildings in the area, making it a must-see destination for history buffs.
