Nagano is home to 29 of Japan's 100 most famous mountains, the largest number in the country, and is called the roof of Japan. Nagano, which is comfortable even in summer, is popular as a vacation home and highland resort, attracting many tourists. In winter, skiers and snowboarders from all over the world gather at famous ski resorts such as Hakuba, which was the site of the Nagano Olympics.
Nagano has an interesting history that has been created in the midst of nature's eternal splendor, and buildings of great historical value, such as Matsumoto Castle and Zenkoji Temple, are particularly famous. Lake Nojiri, where fossils of Naumann elephants have been discovered, is believed to have been used for hunting more than 30,000 years ago, and is a place of great historical romance.
