Miyagi Prefecture faces the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Ou Mountains to the west. 17-century warlord Date Masamune ruled the area of Sendai, and there are still many spots associated with the Date family. Matsushima, one of the three most scenic spots in Japan, is also located in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. In the northern area of the prefecture, Naruko Gorge is famous for its autumn foliage, and Naruko Onsen hot springs are famous throughout Japan. In the southern area of the prefecture, there is the Abukuma River, where boat cruising is popular, and Shiraishi, famous for its cherry blossoms, and other rich nature that changes with the seasons. The Sanriku area, with its rias coastline that can be seen from different angles, is also famous for its seafood.
