This hike has amazing views at the top. But you have to walk for about 6km in the forest before getting there. NOTE: the marked path misses the most beautiful part of this hike; so when you get to the highest point, continue upwards to the cross, then continue on to the fortress ruins. The views of Mont Blanc are amazing!

This is a beautiful hike, as long as the weather is not too hot, because there is a long stretch from Liconi to the lake that is steep, long and can be quite demanding in hot weather. Other than that: you begin with about 1.3 hours of flattish walk to the deserted hamlet of Liconi, where you can fill-up with water. From there it is a steep climb to the lake, with views of Grand Paradiso. You get the first glimpses of the Mont Blanc at the lake, and it only gets better.

Prachtige route!

An iconic climb through amazing scenery along an historic route. After the initial sets of sweeping hairpins outside Pre Saint Didier the going is easy with gentle gradients. After La Thuile the hairpins and gradients increase though there are easier sections in which to recover. It gets steep again before the summit so a last push is needed. It is well worth the effort for the amazing views of the Mont Blanc Massif and views down the valley into France. The decent back down is sweeping and not particularly technical though care is needed on some sharp hairpins. A must do climb for any passionate cyclist.
