Abano Terme: history
In the past, the Venetians living in the surrounding area performed rituals linked to the cult of Aponus, the god of thermal waters and health, on the banks of a small lake of hot water formed by natural springs. In the 7th century B.C., in the area where Abano and Montegrotto Terme stand today, they founded the first thermal centre, which was named after the god. During the Roman era, public baths and spas were built here, as well as entertainment venues such as theatres and gardens, attracting many visitors not only interested in the curative powers of the waters, but also in spending a period of relaxation. The barbarian invasions marked the end of the golden age of the Euganean spas, which lasted until their restoration during the Venetian domination. Between the 18th and 19th century, new spas were built in the territory of today's Abano Terme (which, until 1924, was called Abano Bagni). From the end of the Second World War onwards, the entire Terme Euganee area became increasingly popular. Nowadays, each hotel has its own thermal centre.
.The secrets of the thermal water of the Terre Euganee
The thermal waters of the Terre Euganee (which include, in addition to Abano Terme, also the municipalities of Montegrotto Terme, Galzignano Terme, Battaglia Terme and Teolo) belong to the category of deep underground waters and are rich in bromine, iodine and sodium chloride. They have disinfectant and antiseptic action and, together with thermal mud, are used in various therapies.
What makes the thermal water of the Terre Euganee unique, however, is its origin: the rains that fall on the Pre-Alps and the Little Dolomites, penetrating through the rocks, reach a depth of 2000-3000 metres. After that, the water heads towards the sea via an underground route of almost one hundred kilometres. During this journey lasting several tens of years, it is enriched with mineral salts thanks to the rocks and warms up considerably. When it reaches the area of the Euganean Hills, one part of the water continues towards the sea, the other rises quickly to the surface, passing through fractures in the magmatic rocks. When it gushes out, it has a temperature of around 87degC. The surrounding mud is enriched with the mineral salts contained in the water and is used for mud therapy.

The Euganean Hills: a unique place to explore
Abano Terme is located along the north-eastern edge of the Euganean Hills, a group of reliefs of volcanic origin formed following two cycles of underwater eruptions, one 43 and the other 33 million years ago. At that time, there was still sea in the entire Po Valley. Later, the water began to slowly recede, creating water basins of different sizes around the Euganean Hills.
.The Euganean Hills number 81 and only one of them – the Monde Venda - exceeds 600 metres. They have the peculiarity of having a perfectly conical shape, which is the result of the volcanic phenomena that led to their formation. Their soft lines are home to a great variety of plant and animal species. In order to protect and safeguard these unique natural environments, in 1989 the Parco Regionale dei Colli Euganei was established, the first in the Veneto region.
.It comes as no surprise that this very special area is an attraction for all lovers of outdoor activities, from beginners to experts.
The Euganean Hills Regional Park was founded in 1989 with the aim of protecting and preserving this unique natural area. ...
