Himalayas

The highest mountain range on earth stretches through Asia between the Indian subcontinent and the Tibetan highlands. The Himalayas were formed as a result of India's plate collision with Asia and the unfolding continues to this day: Every year the mountain range grows by several millimeters. The folded mountains comprise ten of the 14 eight-thousand-meter peaks of the world, including Mount Everest. A distinction is made between the High Himalayas and the Near Himalayas, which include the so-called Siwaliks, whose heights are comparable to those of the Alps.

The Himalayas have always exerted a great fascination. With its mountain ranges that exceed 8,000 m several times, it is definitely an impressive sight. The literal translation of its name is "snow place." It houses numerous glaciers, which are also the source of all major river systems in South Asia. With its altitude and special location, the Himalayas are responsible for the climatic differences between South Asia and the northern regions. The mountain range stretches from Central Asia along the border of India, Nepal and Bhutan with Tibet to the Patkai Mountains between Assam and Myanmar and the Hengduan Mountains and separates the Indian subcontinent from the rest of Asia. The Himalaya is not only the highest mountain range on earth but also the deepest gorge, the Kali-Gandaki valley in Nepal is located in the range.
