Tolle Wanderung.

I live here in Crete, and I have taken many visitors through this gorge. I have done Sarakinas in all seasons; the only time it was disappointing was one summer when it was bone-dry, but even then, it was still a beautiful walk. Its beauty makes up for the short distance. I would DEFINITELY say that it is NOT only for experienced climbers, as stated by one of the reviewers! I have seen families with children doing the gorge, and they were thoroughly enjoying themselves. However, I would recommend against doing it with young children or infants. 7-8 year olds may need a little help at times from a competent parent, 10-12 years and older will have the time of their lives if there is water in the gorge. NOTE: As with any of the gorges in Crete, care should always be taken for a day or so after a storm or prolonged rain, as water levels can rise dramatically and swiftly. On entering the gorge, there is a concreted open trough section which is shortly followed by a narrow (3-5m wide) part with impressively high side walls. Use this section as a guide; if you can walk on the stepping stones, it should be fine further up. If the stepping stones are completely submerged by fast-running water, don't take any chances unless you are experienced. If in doubt, you can always turn back; there will be another day. This gorge does NOT require canyoning equipment or climbing experience. Anyone who can walk up and downstairs unaided can do this. In some places, there are ropes fixed to the walls to assist, but many times, if you are surefooted, you don't even need the ropes. If you suffer from vertigo or fear of heights, don't worry, there are no exposed sections like in some gorges on Crete. Nevertheless, it is not a stroll through town or a shopping centre. It is an adventure in wild Crete. REMEMBER: Whoever gets their feet wet first buys the drinks in the Taverna afterwards! Enjoy it, I know you will.
