Nestled in the rugged mountains of Central Greece, Evrytania is an alpine wonderland often celebrated as Europe’s cleanest green sanctuary. Framed by the imposing peaks of Mount Velouchi and Mount Kaliakouda, this dramatic wilderness unfolds through dense fir forests, deep river canyons, cascading waterfalls, and historic stone villages frozen in time.

Getting there

Public transport

Evrytania is accessible via Greece’s intercity bus network (KTEL Evrytanias), with direct daily buses departing from Athens' Kifisos Bus Terminal to Karpenisi (taking about 4 to 4.5 hours), as well as connections from Thessaloniki, Patras, and Agrinio that typically connect through Lamia. International visitors arriving by air or ferry can connect via local transit to the main KTEL terminals in Athens or Thessaloniki to reach Karpenisi. While limited local buses run between Karpenisi and nearby villages like Megalo Chorio and Proussos, schedules are sparse and primarily serve local commuters, so active travelers relying on public transport are strongly advised to arrange local taxis or private transfers to reach specific hiking trailheads and outdoor activity spots.

Directions

Reaching Evrytania is a scenic journey into Central Greece’s alpine heartland, located approximately 285 km northwest of Athens (~3.5 hours) and 370 km southwest of Thessaloniki (~4 hours) via the main motorways to Lamia and National Road 38 to Karpenisi. International travelers can easily fly into Athens or Thessaloniki airports, or take a car ferry from Italy to Igoumenitsa Port (a 3-hour drive away), and rent a vehicle on arrival. Driving your own car is by far the easiest and most practical way to explore this rugged mountainous region, and while paved roads link the main villages, renting a 4x4 or high-clearance AWD vehicle is strongly recommended to easily access remote trailheads, gravel cycling tracks, and high-altitude mountain passes—with winter tires or snow chains being essential between December and March.
