Geographically, Wawern is located on the edge of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park and is surrounded by vineyards as well as picturesque landscapes. It is a popular destination for nature lovers and offers a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling or canoeing. The best time for this is during the spring and summer months.

One of the most famous sights in Wawern is the Karthaus Monastery, which was built in the 14th century and now serves as a cultural centre. Concerts, exhibitions or theatre performances are regularly held here.

For wine connoisseurs, there are numerous opportunities for wine tasting at local vintners or at the annual wine festival in August. You can also enjoy culinary specialities such as tarte flambée or regional dishes here.

If it ever rains, we recommend a visit to the Trier City Museum with its interesting exhibits on the Roman history of the area as well as the crafts of times gone by.

Another highlight in the area of Wawern are the Moselle lock tours from Bernkastel-Kues - a nice way to experience the river up close and at the same time learn more about its historical significance.

In summary, Wawern is a destination that is definitely worth a visit due to its geographical location and special features as well as the tourist attractions and cultural highlights. Whether you enjoy nature or are interested in history and wine, there is something for everyone to discover here. We hope that this Travel Guide will help you make your stay in Wawern unforgettable!

Did this tour in April on a nice sunny day. For navigation I only used my phone with the map on this page, no GPS. This works fine but you have to stop 500 times in total of course. There is nothing technically difficult in the route, but yes there is some serious climbing. I rode it on a hardtail with eagle 1*12 (34/10-50). The route takes appr. 5,5 hours I would say for a fit person, breaks not included. I think its best to ride the tour when its dry, since otherwise it may be challenging and you might get quite a few flats of all the sharp little stones that come up when its wet. In total you maybe have to walk 50 meters at some stairs, apart from that everything is rideable. Limited refuel stations available, I did it with one bidon and that was not quite enough, defenitely in summer you need to refill when possible. Great route and I would recommend it to anyone who is fit but does not look for spectacular descends and other technical stuff.
