Discover the region
The geographical location of Waltrop and Recklinghausen is ideal for a visit: both cities are easily accessible via the A2 motorway or local public transport. Dortmund airport is also only about 30 minutes away.
The region is particularly well known for its industrial culture, which is evident at every turn. Former collieries, ironworks and other industrial buildings have been converted into cultural highlights. For example, the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park.
But there is also plenty to discover directly on site: In Waltrop, the 16th century moated castle Haus Dellwig invites you to linger, while in Recklinghausen you can marvel at an impressive collection of Orthodox art in the Icon Museum.
Culturally, the region also has a lot to offer: The annual Ruhr Festival in Recklinghausen attracts numerous visitors every year. The "FilmSchauPlätze NRW" cinema festival also takes place here - open-air cinema in the open air!
For those who enjoy culinary delights, a visit to Bergmanns Bierstube is a must - it serves hearty Ruhr cuisine. The restaurant Zum Himmelreich in Waltrop is also worth a visit.
If you want to do some sport, the best way is to take a walk through the Hohe Mark nature park. There are numerous hiking and cycling trails to discover here. In summer, the nearby Haltern reservoir invites you to take a dip.
And what do you do in Waltrop when it rains? A visit to the LWL Museum of Archaeology in Herne or the German Mining Museum in Bochum are perfect alternatives for bad weather!
