The geographical location of this region is ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling or skiing. In summer, you can explore the breathtaking nature on the numerous hiking trails or cycle through the picturesque villages. In winter, the nearby Rennsteig ski resort beckons with its slopes and cross-country trails.

The tourist attractions are also a highlight: Wilhelmsburg Castle in Schmalkalden invites you to travel back in time to the Middle Ages, while the toy museum in Steinbach-Hallenberg delights young and old visitors alike. Another must-see is the historic town hall in Meiningen as well as the theatre building, which is considered one of the most beautiful baroque theatres in Europe.

For culture lovers, there are also many highlights: Concerts are held regularly in Meiningen and the annual Shakespeare Festival also attracts thousands of visitors every year. Also worth seeing are the numerous churches and chapels along the way - they tell stories of times gone by.

This region also has much to offer in the way of culinary delights: Be sure to try the famous Thuringian bratwurst or enjoy a cool beer in one of the cosy brewery inns.

And what to do when it rains? Visit the "Aquaria" leisure pool in Schmalkalden or the "Schatzkiste" indoor playground in Steinbach-Hallenberg - even the little ones will get their money's worth here.

Where is it most beautiful? Definitely: On the Rennsteig, Germany's most famous hiking trail. Here you can let yourself be enchanted by nature and leave everyday life behind.
