Discover the region
In Schwerte, a walk through the old town with its many half-timbered houses as well as Hohensyburg Castle, which towers high above the town, is worthwhile. The Haus Osthaus museum is also worth a visit: here you can admire modern art or take part in workshops.
Unna also has a charming old town with narrow streets and old houses. The market square is the heart of the town - a weekly market also takes place here every Saturday. Those interested in history should definitely visit the Westphalian School Museum or go to the Centre for International Light Art.
Culturally, there is a lot to discover in both towns: concerts, theatre performances or exhibitions take place regularly. In summer, for example, the "Zeltfestival Ruhr" festival attracts thousands of visitors.
But what would a trip be without culinary highlights? In Schwerte we particularly recommend the traditional Westphalian cuisine - try "Pfefferpotthast" or "Rheinischer Sauerbraten", for example. In Unna, on the other hand, you will find many international restaurants and cafés offering something for every taste.
For those who like to be active, Schwerte and Unna will not disappoint either: cycling or hiking through the surrounding countryside are popular leisure activities. It is particularly beautiful in spring and summer when everything is in bloom and green. A trip to the nearby Hengsteysee is also worthwhile - here you can swim, go boating or just relax.
And what do you do when it rains? Don't worry - even then there's plenty to do! How about a visit to a museum or a cosy afternoon in one of the many pubs?
Schwert's old town quarter as well as Hohensyburg Castle provide a beautiful backdrop for a walk on a rainy day. In Unna, we recommend a visit to the Linden Brewery Cultural Centre: Concerts are held here and there is even a guided tour of the brewery including a tasting!
So all in all, Schwerte and Unna are definitely worth a trip - whether you are into history, art or nature. We hope our travel guide tips will help you plan your trip in the best possible way!
