Discover the region

Geography

Schlitz is located in the northern part of the state of Hesse and is surrounded by picturesque forests. The town is 270 metres above sea level and offers spectacular views of the Vogelsberg landscape.

Sights

One of Schlitz's best-known landmarks is the 13th-century Hallenburg Castle with its impressive architecture. Another highlight are the historic half-timbered houses in the old town, including the Old Town Hall dating from 1559 or the "Altes Forsthaus" museum. For nature lovers, a walk through the romantic castle park or a hike to the nearby Hoherodskopf - the highest mountain in the Vogelsberg - is worthwhile.

Culture & Events

The annual town festival "Schlitzerländer Trachtenfest" attracts many tourists every year. Here you can enjoy traditional German music as well as taste typical regional specialities. Art lovers will also find what they are looking for here: In summer, the annual art event "Kunst am Zaun" ("Art on the Fence") takes place - at this event, artists exhibit their works along the castle fence.

Culinary specialities

The cuisine of Schlitz is characterised by traditional dishes such as the "Schlitzer Kornmaultaschen" (a kind of filled noodle pockets) or the "Vogelsberger Kräuterlikör". If you like it sweet, you should definitely try the famous "Schlitzer Lebkuchenhaus" - a delicious gingerbread with icing and colourful sprinkles.

Outdoor Activities

For outdoor enthusiasts, Schlitz offers a variety of recreational opportunities. In summer, you can go swimming in the nearby reservoir or hike on one of the numerous hiking routes in the Vogelsberg. In winter, the region entices you to go skiing on the Hoherodskopf or ice skating on the frozen lake.

Total

On the whole, Schlitz is definitely worth a trip! The town has a lot to offer: Historical sights, cultural highlights as well as culinary delights and diverse outdoor activities make a stay here unforgettable. Whether it's sunny or rainy - there is always something to experience in Schlitz!

Super Empfehlung
