Geographical location and special features: Rom lies on the edge of the Teutoburg Forest and is crossed by the river Lippe. The city is characterised by its historic buildings, narrow streets and squares, and numerous parks. A special highlight is the Xanten amphitheatre, which is one of the largest of its kind.
Tourist-relevant sights: Must-see sights include the Roman archaeology museum LVR-RömerMuseum, St. Victor's Cathedral with its impressive stained glass windows and the remains of the former Roman camp Colonia Ulpia Traiana.
Cultural highlights and events: Rom regularly hosts cultural events such as the Antiquities Festival or concerts in the market square of Xanten. A guided tour through the underground catacombs or a visit to the Mariendonk Abbey Museum are also recommended.
Culinary specialities: The region around Rom is known for its hearty cuisine with dishes such as sauerbraten, potato pancakes or even kale soup. Many restaurants also serve local wines - be sure to try them!
Outdoor Activities: In Rom and the surrounding area there are numerous opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling or even canoeing on the river Lippe. A hot air balloon ride over the city is especially beautiful.
Best Seasons: The best time to visit Rome is from May to September, when the weather is pleasantly mild. In winter, on the other hand, it can get very cold - but even then the city has its charm!
What to do in Rome when it rains? Even in rainy weather, there is plenty to do in Rome! How about a visit to the Xanten City Museum or a guided tour of the cathedral, for example? A trip to nearby Düsseldorf is also a good idea.
Where is it most beautiful in Rom? The historic centre around Xanten's market square and along the River Lippe is particularly idyllic and picturesque. Here you can go for leisurely walks and relax.
