Discover the region

Geographically, Detern lies between the cities of Oldenburg and Leer and is surrounded by idyllic landscapes such as the Wildeshauser Geest Nature Park in the south and the North Sea coast in the north. The region is particularly popular with cyclists as it is perfect for exploring on two wheels.

One of the most important sights in Detern is Evenburg Castle, a beautiful 17th century baroque castle with magnificent gardens and parks. The historic mill "Windmühle Hahnentange" is also worth a visit, here you can learn about the history of wind energy or simply enjoy the view.

Cultural highlights can also be discovered: The local history museum shows the history of East Frisia through various exhibits such as furniture, clothing and tools from times gone by. If you like art, you should definitely visit the Emder Art Museum - here you will find a collection of modern works of art by renowned artists from all over the world.

For culinary delights, we recommend typical East Frisian specialities such as tea with Kluntje (white rock candy) or Labskaus - a dish consisting of potatoes, meat and beetroot. Also be sure to try the fish from the North Sea, it doesn't get any fresher than this!

The best outdoor activities in Detern are cycling, hiking or boating on the Ems-Jade Canal. In summer, a visit to the open-air swimming pool is a good idea or you can explore the surroundings on a canoe trip.

If the weather doesn't cooperate, there is still plenty to do: a tour of the historic old town of Leer is always a good idea or you can visit one of the many museums in the region.

Where is the most beautiful? That depends entirely on what you are looking for! If you are looking for peace and relaxation then we recommend a walk along the Ems-Jade Canal - here you can enjoy nature and watch animals. For those interested in culture, a visit to Evenburg Castle with its magnificent gardens as well as a beautiful view of the lake is worthwhile.

All in all, Detern is definitely worth a trip - whether for a day or longer. We hope our travel tips have helped you plan your stay and hope you enjoy exploring this enchanting town in the district of Leer (Ostfriesland), Germany!
