Discover the region
One of the tourist highlights is undoubtedly the famous Chiemsee itself - also known as the "Bavarian Sea". Here you can take a boat trip on a historic sailing yacht or a modern motorboat to explore the islands of the lake: Herrenchiemsee with its magnificent castle built by King Ludwig II, Frauenchiemsee with its 8th century monastery, as well as Krautinsel, the largest uninhabited island in Germany.
Culturally interested visitors will find many museums in the region such as the Franz Marc Museum or the Lokschuppen exhibition centre. In summer there are numerous music festivals such as Jazz am See or Chiemgauer Volkstheater-Festival, while traditional Christmas markets take place in winter.
The culinary scene also has a lot to offer: Try local specialities such as Obatzda (a spicy cheese dip) or Schweinshaxe (roasted pork). Fresh fish straight from the lake are also a special treat!
For outdoor enthusiasts, there are many ways to enjoy nature: Hike on the surrounding mountains such as the Wendelstein or the Kampenwand, cycle on one of the many cycle paths and trails or go swimming in one of the many lakes. In winter, skiers and snowboarders can explore the nearby Sudelfeld ski area.
Even if it should rain, there are plenty of indoor activities: Visit one of the thermal spas in Bad Aibling or Bad Endorf for a relaxing wellness experience.
Chiemsee is worth a trip at any time of year - in spring the meadows and trees are in bloom, in summer the warm waters of the lake tempt you to swim, in autumn the leaves glow in all their colours and in winter the region is transformed into a winter wonderland with snow-covered peaks.
Chiemsee is particularly beautiful around the town of Prien am Chiemsee and along the shores of the lake. Here visitors will also find many cosy hotels and restaurants as well as traditional Bavarian inns.
Overall, Chiemsee offers a perfect mix of culture, nature and culinary experiences - so pack your bag and come on over!
