The city of Braunschweig in Lower Saxony has a lot to offer culture lovers. Under the reign of Henry the Lion, Braunschweig rose to become a flourishing trading city in the Middle Ages, as evidenced by the historic buildings in the centre to this day. Worth seeing are the Burgplatz square with Dankwarderode Castle, St. Blasii Cathedral and Vieweghaus, as well as the Altstadtmarkt square and the Magni quarter.

Under the sign of the lion
The Brunswick Lion is the city's best-known landmark. The monumental statue from the 12th century guards the square at the foot of Dankwarderode Castle and commemorates the reign of Henry the Lion.
Under his influence, the city in Lower Saxony developed into an important trading centre. The River Oker - navigable from Braunschweig to its mouth in the North Sea - favoured trade by water and Braunschweig soon established itself as a Hanseatic city.
Unfortunately, very little remains today of what was once Germany's largest half-timbered town. A large part of the historic old town fell victim to air raids during the Second World War. All the more impressive are the so-called "islands of tradition", where you can still admire the medieval buildings in their original splendour.
In the south of Brunswick is Richmond Palace - a baroque pleasure palace surrounded by an extensive English garden. Ideal for a short break on your walk through the city!
In the city centre, the Braunschweig Residential Palace, rebuilt in 2005, is an impressive sight. While the exterior façade was designed in the style of the pre-war building, the interior of the building today mainly consists of a shopping centre, the so-called "Schloss-Arkaden".
