Geographically, Altenburg lies at the foot of the Ore Mountains and thus offers a picturesque landscape with rolling hills and green forests. The town itself is flowed through by the White Elster River, which meanders idyllically through the centre.

Altenburg is known for its historical sights such as Altenburg Castle, which once served as the residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Altenburg. Today it houses the Lindenau Museum as well as the world's largest collection of skat cards.

Another highlight is the Playing Card Museum, where you can learn all about the history of this popular pastime. For art lovers, a visit to the Mauritianum Museum or the "Heinrich-Hartmann-Haus" theatre museum is recommended.

Cultural highlights can also be found during various events - the annual jazz festival and the annual Christmas and Easter markets on the market square deserve special mention.

For culinary delights, regional specialities such as Thuringian Rostbratwurst or Leipziger Allerlei are available - which are best sampled in a traditional inn.

The area around Altenburg is perfect for outdoor activities such as hiking or cycling - the autumn is particularly beautiful here, when the leaves in the forests turn colourful. Altenburg Castle Park and the "Thuringian Forest" Nature Park are ideal places for a walk or hike.

Even when the weather is bad, there is plenty to discover in Altenburg - the theatre in the Kulturhof Kosma offers regular performances, while you can relax in the "Altenburger Land" adventure pool.

Overall, Altenburg is definitely worth a visit - with its rich history, cultural highlights and picturesque landscapes, this town offers something for everyone. A travel guide for Thuringia would be incomplete without this insider tip!

Tolles Projekt, weiter so.
