The Seine and the Impressionists

The Seine and its banks have inspired many artists, including the Impressionist painters. These include Sisley, Pissarro, Monet and Renoir, who painted one of his best-known pictures, "Le déjeuner des canotiers", in Chatou.

There arefour walking itineraries to discover some thirty reproductions of paintings by the Impressionist painters, placed in the very places where they set up their easels.

Two major cycling itineraries pass through the Saint-Germain Boucles de Seine area: theAvenue Verte London - Parisand the Seine à vélo. These two cycle routes start in central Paris and link London for the former and Deauville or Le Havre for the latter.

Plus: in the mood for an authentic experience? Push open the door of the Sequana canoe restoration workshops in Chatou and learn how to tie a real sailor's knot, or climb aboard Chloé (a small electrically-powered boat) for a gentle ride on the Seine!

Nature walks

Market garden plains, protected natural areas, parks, forests... at Saint Germain Boucles de Seine, nature is everywhere.

The state forests of Marly-le-Roiand Saint-Germain, once the hunting grounds of the kings, are now a favorite destination for walkers. The Marly forest is more hilly than the Saint-Germain forest, making it ideal for family outings on foot or by bike.

With its market-garden plains and communal meadows, Croissy-sur-Seine was once known as the queen of the Halles de Paris, its "pot au feu" vegetables supplying the Parisian stalls. The carrot, the town's emblem, is still celebrated at the annual fête in September. Today, the plains of Carrières-sur-Seine supply the great Parisian tables. Mushrooms are still grown in the underground quarries, some of which can even be visited, but without mushrooms (Carrara City)! In Montesson, salad fields are set against the backdrop of the La Défense towers, while in Mesnil-le-Roi, walkers come across sheep grazing peacefully in the meadows.

Happiness is in the meadow... but also in the gardens, with two national estates. Saint-Germain-en-Laye , with its famous terrace designed by Le Nôtre, dominates the west of Paris, while Marly-le-Roi, with its pretty parkland, is a rural setting, with only the château (royal residence) left standing today.

Bonus: learn to recognize wild plants and how to cook them, cuddle trees or learn to weave a basket... sounds tempting? If you'd like to get back to basics, take the train to Saint-Lazare. In less than 40 minutes, nature is yours!

Paris Region Aventures: treasure hunt

Discover the hidden treasures of Paris Ile-de-France with the Paris Region Aventures app! Of the 50 adventures on offer, 3 walking routes and 1 cycling route take place in Saint Germain Boucles de Seine :

In Carrières-sur-Seine, explore the streets of this village overlooking the Seine and famous for its "pierre de liais", whose troglodyte remains and stone quarries are still visible. Here, the traditions, skills and trades of yesteryear take pride of place, with characters to collect. Millers, washerwomen, quarrymen and many others will be revealed in the course of the puzzles.

On the Louveciennes side, the winners of each mission will have the chance to meet various celebrities who have settled in Louveciennes over the centuries: the Countess Du Barry, Louis XV's favorite, Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun, who portrayed her and Marie-Antoinette, and Brigitte Bardot. Families will enjoy the peaceful, unspoilt atmosphere of the village of Louveciennes, ideally situated between the Seine and the Marly forest.

In Saint-Germain-en-Laye, you can follow in the footsteps of the Sun King, from Le Nôtre's Grande Terrasse to the forest, via the historic quarters of the town center.

In July, a brand new adventure is available, but this time by bike! Take off with the whole family to discover the pretty towns of Le Vésinet, Croissy-sur-Seine and Le Pecq. This ten-kilometre route is suitable for the whole family, allowing you to wander between magnificent villas while discovering the flora and fauna along the banks of the Seine.

I was a Canadian NATO SHAPE student at the Lycée Int'l from 1964-1967 living in Block 10, in St.-Germain, and in Paris XVI. The building was a hi-light of my life when it came to aesthetic stimulation; 8:30 am to 12:00 pm; lunch till 2:10 pm; classes till 4:50 pm. Green Saviem buses to Rocquencourt and another bus to ave Victor Hugo, getting home at 6:10 pm if lucky; in St-Germain I took a local blue bus which had a stop just around the school, grinding gears at 5000 and maybe 25 km/h top speed. Last year and a half just a walk down the hill. Magic woods behind and they are still there; the French do not change anything if it has function or beauty. I still dream of waking up there and going to the Petit Domaine to buy bread, cheese, wine and gum.

Joli parcours malgré pas mal de ligne droite, peu technique si ce n'est les arbres tombés au sol et le sentier peu entretenu en bord de seine. Mais varié et agréable autrement !
