The Landes forest
The Landes forest is one of the largest forests in Western Europe, extending mainly over the Landes, Gironde and Lot-et-Garonne départements. This forest, known locally as "Les Landes" or "la Grande Lande", is mainly made up of maritime pines.
The Landes forest was largely planted in the 19th century to stabilise the coastal dunes, and is now an example of successful reforestation. It offers a unique landscape, with lines of pine trees stretching as far as the eye can see.
